Take Action

Animal Rights in Goa

If we consider ourselves as true animal friends, we should not only declare our love on social media but also fearlessly take action, if and when required. At Alpha Angels Animal Trust, we believe in empowering every single citizen to know what to do when accidents or abuse involving animals are witnessed.

The Most Important Point Of Taking Action Is: Don’t Look Away!

General Preparation

To be prepared for worst case scenarios, organize the following contact details for your location.

SOCIAL MEDIA
Social Media

Join relevant Facebook or WhatsApp groups. Most of them are very active, offering an amazing amount of knowledge and goodwill.

VETS & VET CLINICS
Vets & Vet Clinics

Save local and verified vet numbers in your phone, and ensure your friends and family have them too. Look them up on the map, so you know which one is the closest.

NGOS
NGOs

Research animal NGOs in your locations, and make yourself aware what their opening times are, what services they can offer (e.g. transporting an injured animal to the nearest clinic), and who their main contact partner is.

    • What To Do When You See An Injured Animal

Since our roads become more and more busy, sadly, witnessing animals injured due to accidents is a regular sight to. When you see an injured animal on the road, the most important rule is: Please don’t look away! It is in extreme scenarios like this where animals need most of our help.

    Instead, follow this 5-step-process:

    • Step 1: Secure the animal from ongoing traffic. If the animal is badly hurt, too heavy, or there is a risk it will bite you, don’t touch it but ensure that traffic is kept away. If possible, carefully move the animal to a safer space near the roadside.
    • Step 2: Take pictures and videos, and get a clear idea of where the injury lies, how serious it is (e.g. broken bone versus massive loss of blood), and how much the animal is movable.
    • Step 3: Post Pictures and a detailed description on animal welfare groups on social media FB Groups -> Those groups are usually very active and full of animal lovers, and there is a high chance someone is close by
    • Step 4: If necessary, call your local animal NGO or your mobile vet, and report the case. If you don’t have any number, please contact Alpha Angels (+91) 99301 43336).
    • Step 5: Wait until the NGO representative comes. Please don’t leave the animal alone! Talk to it calmly, and give drinking water if possible.
    • Step 6: Once the NGO representative or the vet reaches the scene, give your full contact details, and explain the situation and how you found the animal as precisely as possible. Often, the little details can make a huge difference.

If at any point, you are unsure what to do next, please contact us immediately!

    • Reporting Of Animal Abuse

Once you witness animal abuse in any form – it may be an animal tied 24/7, clearly injured, suffering from malnutrition, abused, mishandled, or not cared for in any other form – the most important thing is to document the case with videos and photos. Please don’t walk up to the people you think are responsible for the abuse, or try to free or feed the animal; just focus on collecting evidence as a first step. Once clear evidence is with you, please follow the protocol below, and report the case with your videos and photos, and a clear description of the location.

If you are unsure about what to do in a particular case, please contact us!

Protocol for Animal Abuse in Goa

PLEASE NOTE: There are 2 Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)s in Goa; both are independent of each other. One is in the North District, and one in the South. Each is headed by the District Collector. Since these are District Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)s as mandated by the rules under the PCA Act, they are referred to as the District Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) (North) or (South); or DSPCA (N) and DSPCA (S) for short.

    • Animal Rights

No person shall beat, kick, injure, kill, torture, cause stress and discomfort to any animal or being the owner, allow such treatment to be inflicted upon any animal.
    – Section 3 and 11, Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, Section 429, Indian Penal Code

Only if we know our rights can we act upon them. Animals don’t have a choice, and thus need us to help reinforce what is legally theirs: the right to a peaceful, cruelty-free, and harmonious existence. India has very strong laws that not only protect stray animals but also those who feed them. For more details, read the full document below to learn about animal rights in India.
